The Cat Who...Cookbook

The Cat Who...Loved to Eat!
This cookbook is a compilation of recipes from "The Cat Who..." mystery series written by Lilian Jackson Braun. All of Qwill's favorites are listed (even KoKo's favorites are included) along with a short passage from the book in which the dish appeared. There are over 200 recipes in the book, and each offers ingredients attainable in most areas. However, cooks that struggle in the kitchen may find some of the recipes intimidating. Fans of the series will love taking a walk down memory lane through this book, even if they cannot make all of the dishes.

I am a huge fan of Lilian Jackson Braun and was delighted to see that there was a cookbook available for many of the dishes she wrote about in her books. I found it to be fun to remember the meals that Qwill ate throughout each book, and I especially liked that the authors included passages from the appropriate book with each recipe. If you are a fan of the series, or if you like to cook, then this is the book for you. Enjoy!

Meowingly Tasty Recipes
"Pompously Qwilleran said, "I cannot tell a lie. I picked the lock of the library closet. There are tons of papers in there...There was also a recipe for Lena's angel food cake with chocolate frosting that sounded delicious."

Cat Who....Cookbook contains delicious meals to meow about. The menus were inspired by Lilian Jackson Braun's beloved cat mysteries. Just look for the paw prints and you will know you have the right book! I first read her books while on a weekend vacation and found them to be amusing.

If you are a fan of "The Cat Who" series, you will love this book. Cookbook collectors will also love reading instead of cooking. The authors are college professors who have also had their recipes featured in the Atlanta Journal. When they are not editing cookbooks or offering cooking workshops, they have "Cat Who" parties, which featured dishes inspired by the mystery series.

Chicken in a Dark and Mysterious Sauce sounds good to me. Now, my two cats always know when I am cooking chicken. They stand around looking up at me with those sad little kitty eyes and beg for a piece of chicken.

I think your cats would love it if you cooked them dinner. After all, cats give us so much love. Why not cook up a meal for yourself and a treat for your furry feline friends to some freshly cooked chicken.

This is a one-of-a-kind cookbook which brings together appetizing meals out of the pages of the novels and features a "feline fare" section. This book is 342 pages and contains 200 recipes inspired by the events in the mystery books.

These are some of the foods that were eaten by Qwilleran and his companions:

Lobster Bisque
Mrs. Cobb's Coconut Cake
Curried Lamb
Raspberry Trifle
Open-Face Tuna Sandwiches
Fried Chicken
Turkey Tetrazzini
Easy Chocolate Cake
Samosas
Sea Scallops in Saffron Cream Sauce
Hummus
Vegetarian Curry

Includes Metric Equivalents and Cooking Temperatures and easy-to-use index. All the recipes have been selected to represent the setting of the stories. Each section begins with a menu for a complete meal found in the corresponding Cat Who...novel.

"What would you like for breakfast? Turkey from the deli? Or cocktail shrimp from a can?" Koko was not present to cast his vote, but Yum Yum was rubbing against Qwilleran's ankles in anticipation and curling her tail lovingly around his leg, and he knew she preferred turkey. He began to mince slices of white meat. (The Cat Who Went Underground)

Simple, simple, simple...
The recipes in this book are plain and simple. Some sounding as splendid as they did in their original stories. Love how she relates the recipe or menu to what cat who novel...cute idea.

Color for Men

Still Feels Current 19 Years Later
I have not quite finished reading this book but am very excited about it. It really is a good comprehensive guide for men. These are difficult lessons for men to digest and they are presented fairly straightforwardly and in a manner that is simple to understand. Despite the fact that the book is almost twenty years old, it is one of the few where I find the illustrations do not seem particularly out of date. On one point I may have to disagree with Ms Jackson. She states that a man should not mix three patterns when wearing a suit, shirt, and tie. I find that in modern dress, this can distinguish the men from the boys. I do agree that this is somehting that not all men will be able to do effectively so it may be best to avoid it (which may be the authors point in discouraging it). If you want to go one step beyond this book, pick up Alan Flusser's Style and the Man. With these two resources, you will have no excuse for not looking your best every day.

Absolutely brilliant book for men
This is a great style book for men since there are few good ones out there for us and, if we spend too much time thinking about it, some people think we're you know what!

The main thrust of this book is: different color and shades look best on certain people depending on their skin coloring but that isn't limited to race either. The four areas are: winter, spring, summer and fall. Few variations in each one, too.

Now, that alone would give this a four star but the author goes beyond that: she covers hair styles based on face shapes, combining colors, clothes to buy based on your dressing style (these are broken down, too) and advice for what to seek out based on your color styles and your dressing styles. For instance, a more formal type gets certain types of jackets and slacks whereas a casual type gets more jeans and the like.

Excellent book. Highly recommend.

A book that no man that wears clothes should be without...
I've bought several 'men's guide to fashion' books over the last couple of years, and this is simply the best book on this subject I've ever read. This book will help you determine what you look best in (colors, fit, etc.), and how to coordinate your purchases so that everything you buy will go with everything else. It's a book that no man should be without--ESPECIALLY IF YOU HATE TO SHOP. This book will teach you what you need to know so you can spend less time looking for clothes, and more time receiving complements for how you look in them!

Motivation to take a chance to succeed
Everything has a price was uplifting to me. To know that many things may be in your way but that is part of the price you pay to get to the goals you have set. I really liked the bus driver portion. This is a good book to read when you want to reach a goal but there seems to be many road blocks in the path. If we remember there is a price to pay for what we want, mountains will seem like small hills.

A Good Book by a Great Person
I have recently read this book in one sitting. It was very interesting. To have been a child of divorce, go through a rape,a divorce herself, and yet make something out of herself is a testament in itself. Ms.Jackson wrote a book straight from the heart, and she showed where she made mistakes, yet in spite of them, she perservered. If anyone have had trials and feel that they cannot rise above their own ashes, they need to read Ms.Jackson's story, and move on.

Reader, from Augusta GA
Excellent book by an excellent and talented writer. This book was like sitting down and talking to your mother and grandmother and receiving advise and encouragement without knowing that they are providing it to you. Ms. Jackson was able to show that just because you are successful in the eyes of others it does not mean that you are happy and without problems. Finally, she encourages you that with God you can withstand and overcome your storm.

When Halley came to Jackson, to London... I fell in love
I loved the song first. Mary Chapin Carpenter sang me and my wife through our courtship. I am English, Tracy's American by birth (and southern by the grace of god). Tracy bought me the book for Christmas. Reading it and listening to the tape reminds me of when we first met. Now we live in Alabama, I look up in the sky, see the same stars my family in the UK see and the song seems to talk to me about that too.

Beautiful
This is an amazing book and tape. The illustrations go beautifully with Mary Chapin Carpenter's words. My kindergarten class loves it as do I. I bought an extra copy to keep at home.

Absolutely wonderful.
I've bought and given away 16 copies of this magnificent book. With its glorious pictures and haunting song, parents love it as much as their tots.

Michael Jackson's Great Beer Guide

The best beer book i have
This book is simply the best beer book i have. Michael Jackson's at its best...

Excellent
I've been a fan for many years of both Mr. Jackson's beer and single-malt scotch books, and I own all three editions of his scotch book.

The single-malt whisky volumes especially taught me how to isolate and appreciate the different essences and flavors in a particular whisky. Having learned to pick out all the flavors Mr. Jackson mentioned, I was even after a while able to come up with new things on my own, a true testament to a fine teacher and connoisseur of whisky and spirits.

I also learned a lot about beer from this book. Jackson provides tasting notes and interesting historical details about the 500 beers in this book. The beers are listed in alphabetical order by brewer rather than by type or style of beer, but that makes them easier to just look up to find the beer you want to learn about.

For example, Jackson discusses the Schneider Weisse brewery wheat beer. This Bavarian distillery is the oldest one to have specialized only in producing wheat beers, going all the way back to 1607. I tried it as a result of Jackson's recommendation, and it really is superb. It's a heavier, more intense example of the wheat beer style, with lots of character and fruitiness, with clove, spicey, and pineapple-like flavors.

Partly as a result of this book, I was led to try other styles and beers that I might not have tasted. As a result I feel I'm much more electic in my beer tastes than I was before, and I like and have learned to appreciate many different pilsners, lagers, ales, stouts, bocks, and many of the Belgian brews--of which there are up to a dozen or more different types--because of Mr. Jackson's erudite writing. A good example of this is the sweet Belgian lambic beers, which are not to everyone's taste but which I am now fond of, in addition to the other less sweet types.

Overall, a great book to read and learn from by a great connoisseur.

Very useful and complete
I think this is an essential Michael Jackson's book. If you would like to know all about beers of the world, this is the perfect book. It has shorts but complete reviews (types, taste, history).
Excellent photos and paper.
I recommend it for beer lovers and collectors.

Tales from the Red Sox Dugout
Published in Paperback by Sports Publishing, Inc. (20 April, 2001)
Authors: Jim Prime, Bill Nowlin, and Bob Jackson
Average review score:

Interesting Red Sox stories
It isn't necessary to be a Red Sox fan to enjoy reading this book. It's good to read of the crazy stunts that some of the ball players pulled. I remember a lot of the older players like Ted Williams and Pesky and more of that era. VERY GOOD READING!!

I love Nomar!
I love Nomar Garciaparra, and the cover shot of him and Pedro Martinez alone is worth the price of the book. The photo, the articles about him, and his back-cover endorsement of the book made me buy it. But I soon realized there is a lot more to this book! As a relatively young Red Sox fan, it made me realize that the Bosox have a long, colorful, and very funny history. I would highly recommend this book to all Red Sox fans! In fact all baseball fans will enjoy this book.

For Baseball followers everywhere
Baseball's history is replete with many colorful characters, towering heroes, magnificent records and streaks of fortune, both good and ill. Certainly the Boston Red Sox have had more than their share. I found "Tales from the Red Sox Dugout" highly informative and entertaining. It's clear that author Jim Prime and his colleague Bill Nowlin have a deep love for this team, its history and many of the players that have made the Sox legendary.

The book is a collection of summaries, ordered alphabetically by player. Each summary includes background on the player, information on their accomplishments and one or more very amusing anecdotes. Several sections are well illustrated by Bob Jackson - you can see almost see the ball reflected in Carlton Fisk's eyes as it flies down the left field line. Perhaps its my bias as a baseball fan, but this sport seems to produce more laugh-out-loud stories than any other I can think of.

Buy and read this book - you'll learn why the mouth of Pedro Martinez may be as formidable as his right arm; why it's a good thing that GQ did not publish during the career of Carl Yaztrzemksi; why Bill Lee finds Gerbils praiseworthy; what might happen if the Splendid Splinter were to face the Big Unit. You will also learn about the humanity of several players and about their personal efforts in regards to the Jimmy Fund that helps young cancer victims in New England. The section on Ted Williams obviously reflects the passions of the authors and it's clear that the commitment to the team and players continues in their profile of Nomar Garciaparra.

Highly recommended that you add this book to your baseball collection.

The Citadel of Chaos

The Citadel of Chaos
The Citadel of Chaos is the second book in the successful Fighting Fantasy gamebook series, written by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. In this medieval style gamebook, you play the part of a wizard/warrior hero, sent to prevent an invasion, by slaying a Dark Sorcerer Warlord called 'Balthus Dire'.

In the adventure, you have to journey to Dire's citadel, explore his dastardly maze-like fortress, overcoming traps, hostile fantasy creatures and collecting certain artefacts; which you must find to complete you quest. If you manage to avoid being imprisoned or killed, you can face Balthus Dire in a melodramatic fight to the death.

This FF book is not the best one ever written but, without doubt, is an absolute FF classic. The second book in the series, the first one written by Steve on his own, the Citadel of Chaos has all the fresh enthusiasm of a first work. The traps, monsters and situations are original and exciting; a must for all FF readers.

Another thing that tipped the balance for me was the wonderfully wicked way Dire keeps putting you down when you confront him in his lair. I have vivid recollections of being branded as an 'impudent peasant' by the shaven headed scourge of Allansia. The ending is especially satisfying, if you get that far that is...

An excellent Fighting Fantasy gamebook
Citadel of Chaos is the second in the wonderful series that is Fighting Fantasy. Here, your job as the star pupil of a powerful wizard, is to slay a malevolent leader that is amassing an army of evil. The introduction of magic into the series is excellent, making many encounters decided by finesse rather than by "boring" hand to hand combat. Personally, I like FF gamebooks that have something in addition to Skill, Stamina and Luck. Typical of many gamebooks, the adventure climaxes in a battle with a powerful foe. However, the book contains many interesting encounters leading up to the final foe that makes it stand out from an ordinary "dungeon romp". All in all, this book is worthy of any Fighting Fantasy collection.

The Cat Who Wasn't There: And the Cat Who Blew the Whistle

THE CAT WHO MOVED A MOUNTAIN
I HAVE 17 "CAT WHO" BOOKS AND LOVE EACH ONE. NO VILE LANGUAGE, GOOD VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR. ALSO LILLIAN JACKSON BRAUN IS AN OUTSTANDING WRITER, PLUS BEING SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE DISPOSITIONS AND ANTICS OF CATS. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW MANY BOOKS THERE ARE AND IS THERE A SEQUENCE TO FOLLOW WHEN READING THEM? I HAVE READ EACH OF MINE TWO & THREE TIMES AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE NEXT ONE TO BE ISSUED. I AM CURRENTLY READING THE CAT WHO MOVED A MOUNTAIN AND FIND IT HAS MORE MYSTERY THAN OTHERS.

The Cat Who Series
There is NO one who can tell it like Mrs. Braun! It's obvious she's a cat-person; she captures the many nuances of cats, their interaction with "their" human (in this case, Mr. Q), manages to throw in lessons for all cat lovers as well as tell one heckuva mystery in the process. I've been reading her books since the first one was published, they are like GOLD to own! I anxiously await each new adventure and pray for Mrs. Braun's continued health so we can all continue to enjoy her magnificant Cat Who series for many years to come.

The Cat Who series
Ms. Braun's books are like eating peanuts--gotta read them all! Unlike some mysteries where the cat is a minor player, her cats share the limelight equally with their mustachioed "companion", James ("Jim") Quilleran. Koko, the male of the Siamese pair, has an uncanny sense for solving mysteries, for which he tries to give clues to "Jim". The stories are handled with finesse, no bad language, and not too graphically gory. I suggest you purchase them in order of publication date, to be able to follow the series better, although, they can be read independantly. A must-read for both the cat lover AND the mystery lover! You can't help but turn the "next page"....Absolutely enthralling!

The Cat Who Wasn't There
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Lilian Jackson Braun
Average review score:

The title is (sadly) very accurate
When I picked this novel up from my local library, I was VERY disappointed to see that underneath the cute pawprints on the cover and the "Cat Who" part of the title, and the reviews calling this series 'great for cat lovers!' that this book (and the whole series, in general) isn't about cats at all. It's about a Bill Gates-level rich man and his lovers and their big Scottish adventure. Big whoop-de-do. And half the time I forgot there were even supposed to BE cats in this book, since they rarely appeared. The cats are simply there as background pets, and sure, Koko knocks a few books off a shelf here and there to coveniently help solve a mystery but doesn't do much else. A book about cats would be about just that - cats and NOT humans. And the fact that this book pretends to be about these small furry mammals, when it isn't, is just disgusting in my eyes. Only Braun's short story collection, "The Cat Who Had 14 Tales", actually contains some material that is truely about cats and not humans. Cat lovers, don't waste your time with this series, especially since there are so many mystery series (such as Shirley Rosseau's beautifully written Joe Grey Mysteries) out there that ARE about cats.

One of my favorites
This is one of my favorite "Cat Who" mysteries. The descriptions of Scotland and its landscape make this one worth it. Koko and Yum Yum work well together. This is one of Braun's best for showing feelings. When Yum Yum was catnapped, I felt a lot of the same feelings that Qwill probably felt. It might be better, however, if Yum Yum were allowed to help Qwill and Koko solve the mystery, instead of being a cute little female.

Cats, Scotland, and Mystery, Too!
One of the great things about THE CAT WHO . . . series is that you can read them in order, or choose not to. Each book stands on its own, and is a wonderful visit to the town "400 miles north of everywhere." This is the third Braun mystery that I've read, and I especially liked this one because of its Scottish theme.

As the story starts, Jim Qwilleran is rushing home in response to an incident involving his girlfriend, Polly. She is fine, but he soon has to deal with the return of a very persistent old flame, Dr. Melinda. Things get really interesting when all three are participants in an ambitious group tour of Scotland made up of Moose County residents. They tour castles and lochs, learn legends, and eat hearty Scottish breakfasts. The fun is cut short with the death of one of the small group. The tourists return home, and Qwill soon suspects foul-play. With hints from his remarkable cat, Koko, he begins to follow a trail of clues.

Qwill has to face new challenges in this book. For the first time, he realizes that after a life essentially lived alone, he has come to care deeply for others. In addition to the deepening relationship of Qwill and Polly, there is also the warm affection of scenes with Qwill and his two cats, Koko and Yum Yum. Scottish history, folklore, and customs also inform this smart mystery. It even includes a wonderful production of "the Scottish play," Macbeth, in which many central characters play a role.

Forget it!
If you know your season and your best colors (from any other Color Me beautiful book) then forget this one. You're much better off buying Bobbi Brown's or Aucoin's book, both of which will offer you much better make-up tips and ideas.

The book is badly presented with boring pictures and graphics and an uninspiring layout that does nothing to attract your eye. When you go through Brown's or Aucoin's books, you find yourself itching to put some make on, with this one, you'll close the book and wonder what's on TV.

Having learned through the Color system how to find clothes that flattered my natural coloring, I can easily highlight with make-up.
